Catch a Free *NIX distro by the toe!

So right now I’m looking very strongly into getting a cheap PC from ISU surplus and setting up a x86 *NIX box to use as a webserver and something that stay connected to AIM while I move around campus with Sam. Really there are only a few stumbling blocks, Money, and what to install on it when I do get it. It will undoubtedly come with Windows of some sort preinstalled that I probably will just get rid of strait off the bat. But after that, what do I put to replace it?! One choice is some sort of Linux distro. I’m not really looking for any X server prettiness (although… playing with X using Apple’s X11 would be fun), the plus to this is that I get my hands dirty with some Linux. My other choice would be FreeBSD probably. The plus to this is that I can probably run almost anything on the computer (which needs a name) that I can run on my powerbook which would be cool. If you are reading this and have any ideas (and or input into plus/minuses of FreeBSD vs. Linux) drop me a line at: tedger (at) gmail [dot] com or IM me
