This post is pretty nerdy, you have been forewarned.

Recently I decided that music has become somewhat of a burden on my Powerbook. It only has a 40GB hard drive and with over 10GB of that being music I think it's a little ridiculous. Another ridiculous thing is that I have a beautiful 4.1 speaker system that I rarely use to it's full potential, the powerbook only has a headphone jack. while pondering this situation I realized the perfect solution: Aria. Aria has a built in 6.1 sound card (thanks to the nForce2 chip-set) and a 80GB hard drive. Without all the other things that clutter Sam's (my powerbook's) hard drive, double the hard drive space, and a better sound card aria makes the perfect jukebox.
The idea of using it as a media center of sorts isn't new. It's been suggested to me a couple times. But quite frankly what I've seen of linux's capability of doing things like hooking up to a tv for video, my powerbook can't be touched. This on the other hand is very simple all it would require would be a suitable player. Aria running headless makes primarily graphical players cumbersome, and far from ideal. However Peter, Mr. Linux Extraordinare, gave me the answer.
MPD, a Music player daemon with support for MP3s and AACs. The whole thing is just great and I'm already enjoying using it. It lacks the simple single user interface of iTunes, but what it looses in that it makes up for in versatility, and pure cool factor.
